حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ جَمِيعًا عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ

Mua'ada 'Adawiyya reported 'A'isha as saying: The Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) used to observe four rak'ahs in the forenoon prayer and he sometimes observed more as Allah pleased.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَی قَالَ مَا أَخْبَرَنِي أَحَدٌ أَنَّهُ رَأَی النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي الضُّحَی إِلَّا أُمُّ هَانِئٍ فَإِنَّهَا حَدَّثَتْ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ بَيْتَهَا يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَکَّةَ فَصَلَّی ثَمَانِي رَکَعَاتٍ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ صَلَّی صَلَاةً قَطُّ أَخَفَّ مِنْهَا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ کَانَ يُتِمُّ الرُّکُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ وَلَمْ يَذْکُرْ ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قَوْلَهُ قَطُّ

A hadith like this has been narrated by Qatada with the same chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنِي حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَی وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ قَالَا أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ وَحَرَصْتُ عَلَی أَنْ أَجِدَ أَحَدًا مِنْ النَّاسِ يُخْبِرُنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبَّحَ سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَی فَلَمْ أَجِدْ أَحَدًا يُحَدِّثُنِي ذَلِکَ غَيْرَ أَنَّ أُمَّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَی بَعْدَ مَا ارْتَفَعَ النَّهَارُ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ فَأُتِيَ بِثَوْبٍ فَسُتِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَکَعَ ثَمَانِيَ رَکَعَاتٍ لَا أَدْرِي أَقِيَامُهُ فِيهَا أَطْوَلُ أَمْ رُکُوعُهُ أَمْ سُجُودُهُ کُلُّ ذَلِکَ مِنْهُ مُتَقَارِبٌ قَالَتْ فَلَمْ أَرَهُ سَبَّحَهَا قَبْلُ وَلَا بَعْدُ قَالَ الْمُرَادِيُّ عَنْ يُونُسَ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ أَخْبَرَنِي

Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Laila reported: No one has ever narrated to me that he saw the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) observing the forenoon prayer, except Umm Hani. She, however, narrated that the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) entered her house on the day of the Conquest of Mecca and prayed eight rak'ahs (adding): I never saw a shorter prayer than it except that he performed the bowing and prostration completely. But (one of the narrators) Ibn Bashshar in his narration made no mention of the word: Never .

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ يَحْيَی قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَی مَالِکٍ عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ أَنَّ أَبَا مُرَّةَ مَوْلَی أُمِّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أُمَّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ تَقُولُ ذَهَبْتُ إِلَی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ يَغْتَسِلُ وَفَاطِمَةُ ابْنَتُهُ تَسْتُرُهُ بِثَوْبٍ قَالَتْ فَسَلَّمْتُ فَقَالَ مَنْ هَذِهِ قُلْتُ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَالَ مَرْحَبًا بِأُمِّ هَانِئٍ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ غُسْلِهِ قَامَ فَصَلَّی ثَمَانِيَ رَکَعَاتٍ مُلْتَحِفًا فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَعَمَ ابْنُ أُمِّي عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنَّهُ قَاتِلٌ رَجُلًا أَجَرْتُهُ فُلَانُ ابْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ أَجَرْنَا مَنْ أَجَرْتِ يَا أُمَّ هَانِئٍ قَالَتْ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ وَذَلِکَ ضُحًی

Abdullah b. Harith b. Naufal reported: I had been asking about, as I was desirous to find one among people who should inform me, whether the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) observed the forenoon prayer, but I found none to narrate that to me except Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib (the real sister of Hadrat 'Ali), who told me that on the day of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) came (to our house) after the dawn had (sufficiently) arisen. A cloth was brought and privacy was provided for him (the Holy Prophet). He took a bath and then stood up and observed eight rak'ahs. I do not know whether his Qiyam (standing posture) was longer, or bending or prostration or all of them were of equal duration. She (Umm Hani) further said: I never saw him saying this Nafl prayer prior to it or subsequently. (Al-Muradi narrated on the authority of Yunus that he made no mention of the words: He informed me. )

حَدَّثَنِي حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّی بْنُ أَسَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي مُرَّةَ مَوْلَی عَقِيلٍ عَنْ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّی فِي بَيْتِهَا عَامَ الْفَتْحِ ثَمَانِيَ رَکَعَاتٍ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ قَدْ خَالَفَ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ

Abu Murra, the freed slave of Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib, reported Umm Hani to be saying: I went to the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) on the day of the Conquest of Mecca and found him taking a bath, and Fatimah, his daughter, had provided him privacy with the help of a cloth. I gave him salutation and he said: Who is she? I said: It is Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Greeting for Umm Hani. When he had completed the bath, he stood up and observed eight rak'ahs wrapped up in one cloth. When he turned back (after the prayer), I said to him: Messenger of Allah, the son of my mother 'Ali b. Abu Talib is going to kill a person, Fulan b. Hubaira whom I have given protection. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said: We too have given protection whom you have given protection, O Umm Hani. Umm Hani said: It was the forenoon (prayer).

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَائَ الضُّبَعِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ وَهُوَ ابْنُ مَيْمُونٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلٌ مَوْلَی أَبِي عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَی بْنِ عُقَيْلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَی بْنِ يَعْمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ الدُّؤَلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يُصْبِحُ عَلَی کُلِّ سُلَامَی مِنْ أَحَدِکُمْ صَدَقَةٌ فَکُلُّ تَسْبِيحَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَکُلُّ تَحْمِيدَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَکُلُّ تَهْلِيلَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَکُلُّ تَکْبِيرَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَأَمْرٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ صَدَقَةٌ وَنَهْيٌ عَنْ الْمُنْکَرِ صَدَقَةٌ وَيُجْزِئُ مِنْ ذَلِکَ رَکْعَتَانِ يَرْکَعُهُمَا مِنْ الضُّحَی

Abu Murra narrated on the authority of Umm Hani that the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) on the day of the Conquest of Mecca observed in her house eight rak'ahs of prayer in one cloth, its opposite corners having been tied from the opposite sides.

حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو التَّيَّاحِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِثَلَاثٍ بِصِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ کُلِّ شَهْرٍ وَرَکْعَتَيْ الضُّحَی وَأَنْ أُوتِرَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَرْقُدَ

Abu Dharr reported Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Allah's glorification is an act of charity. Every utterance of praise of Him is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Oneness is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Greatness is an act of charity, enjoining good is an act of charity, forbidding what is distreputable is an act of charity, and two rak'ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبَّاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ وَأَبِي شِمْرٍ الضُّبَعِيِّ قَالَا سَمِعْنَا أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِهِ

Abu Huraira reported. My friend (the Holy Prophet, may peace be upon him) has instructed me to do three things: three fasts during every month, two rak'ahs of the forenoon prayer, and observing Witr prayer before going to bed.

حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّی بْنُ أَسَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُخْتَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الدَّانَاجِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو رَافِعٍ الصَّائِغُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَذَکَرَ مِثْلَ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

A hadith like this has been narrated by Abu Huraira by another chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْکٍ عَنْ الضَّحَّاکِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حُنَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُرَّةَ مَوْلَی أُمِّ هَانِئٍ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَائِ قَالَ أَوْصَانِي حَبِيبِي صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِثَلَاثٍ لَنْ أَدَعَهُنَّ مَا عِشْتُ بِصِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ کُلِّ شَهْرٍ وَصَلَاةِ الضُّحَی وَبِأَنْ لَا أَنَامَ حَتَّی أُوتِرَ

Abu Huraira reported: My friend Abu'l-Qasim ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) instructed me to do three things, and the rest of the hadith is the same.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ يَحْيَی قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَی مَالِکٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ حَفْصَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ کَانَ إِذَا سَکَتَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ مِنْ الْأَذَانِ لِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ وَبَدَا الصُّبْحُ رَکَعَ رَکْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُقَامَ الصَّلَاةُ

Abu Murra, the freed slave of Umm Hani, narrated on the authority of Abu Darda': My Friend ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) instructed me in three (acts), and I would never abandon them as long as I live. (And these three things are): Three fasts during every month, the forenoon prayer, and this that I should not sleep till I have observed the Witr prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ يَحْيَی وَقُتَيْبَةُ وَابْنُ رُمْحٍ عَنْ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ح و حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ح و حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَعِيلُ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ کُلُّهُمْ عَنْ نَافِعٍ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ کَمَا قَالَ مَالِکٌ

Ibn 'Umar reported that Hafsa, the Mother of the Believers, informed him that when the Mu'adhdhin became silent after calling (people) to the dawn prayer, the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) commenced the dawn (prayer) when it dawned by observing two short rak'ahs before the commencement of the (Fard) prayer.
