حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو کُرَيْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ح و حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَقُ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ح و حَدَّثَنَا الْأَشَجُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ح و حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ کُلُّهُمْ عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ

Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: The one who is most versed in Allah's Book should act as Imam for the people, but If they are equally versed in reciting it, then the one who has most knowledge regarding Sunnah if they are equal regarding the Sunnah, then the earliest one to emigrate; it they emigrated at the same time, then the earliest one to embrace Islam. No man must lead another in prayer where (the latter) has authority, or sit in his place of honour in his house, without his permission. Ashajj in his narration used the word, age in place of Islam .

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّی حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَائٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَوْسَ بْنَ ضَمْعَجٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُا قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِکِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَأَقْدَمُهُمْ قِرَائَةً فَإِنْ کَانَتْ قِرَائَتُهُمْ سَوَائً فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً فَإِنْ کَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَائً فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَکْبَرُهُمْ سِنًّا وَلَا تَؤُمَّنَّ الرَّجُلَ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَلَا فِي سُلْطَانِهِ وَلَا تَجْلِسْ عَلَی تَکْرِمَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَکَ أَوْ بِإِذْنِهِ

A hadith like this has been narrated by A'mash by the same chain of transmitters

حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ مَالِکِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ قَالَ أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ شَبَبَةٌ مُتَقَارِبُونَ فَأَقَمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً وَکَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَحِيمًا رَقِيقًا فَظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدْ اشْتَقْنَا أَهْلَنَا فَسَأَلَنَا عَنْ مَنْ تَرَکْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِنَا فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا إِلَی أَهْلِيکُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا فِيهِمْ وَعَلِّمُوهُمْ وَمُرُوهُمْ فَإِذَا حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ لَکُمْ أَحَدُکُمْ ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّکُمْ أَکْبَرُکُمْ

Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported: The Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said to us: The one who is well grounded in Allah's Book and is distinguished among them in recitation should act as; Imam for the people. and if they are equally versed in reciting it, then the one who has most knowledge regarding Sunnah; if they are equal regarding the Sunnah, then the earliest one to emigrate; If they emigrated at the same time, then the oldest one in age. No man must lead another in prayer in latter's house or where (the latter) has authority, or sit in his place of honour in his house, except that he gives you permission or with his permission.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ وَخَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ

Malik b. Huwairith reported: We came to the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) and we were all young men of nearly equal age. We stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for twenty nights, and as the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) was extremely kind and tender of heart, he therefore, thought that we were eager (to see) our family (we felt homesick). So he asked us about the members of the family that we had left behind and when we informed him, he said: Go back to your family, stay with them, and teach them (beliefs and practices of Islam) and exhort them to good, and when the time for prayer comes, one amongst you should announce Adhan and then the oldest among you should lead the prayer.

This hadith has been transmitted by Ayyub with the same chain of narrator.

حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّائِ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ مَالِکِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي فَلَمَّا أَرَدْنَا الْإِقْفَالَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ قَالَ لَنَا إِذَا حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ فَأَذِّنَا ثُمَّ أَقِيمَا وَلْيَؤُمَّکُمَا أَکْبَرُکُمَا

Malik b. Huwairith Abu Sulaiman reported: I came to the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) along with other persons and we were young men of nearly equal age, and the rest of the hadith was transmitted like the hadith narrated before.

لَنَا إِذَا حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ فَأَذِّنَا ثُمَّ أَقِيمَا وَلْيَؤُمَّکُمَا أَکْبَرُکُمَا ← وَصَاحِبٌ لِي فَلَمَّا أَرَدْنَا الْإِقْفَالَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ ← اَتَیْتُ النَّبِیَّ ← مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ: ← أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، ← خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّائِ ← عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ← إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ

Malik b Huwairith reported: I came to the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) along with a companion of mine, and when we intended to return from him, he said: When there is time for prayer, announce prayer, pronounce Iqama, and the oldest amongst you should lead the prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ إِسْمَعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَجَلِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا جَرِيرُ أَلَا تُرِيحُنِي مِنْ ذِي الْخَلَصَةِ بَيْتٍ لِخَثْعَمَ کَانَ يُدْعَی کَعْبَةَ الْيَمَانِيَةِ قَالَ فَنَفَرْتُ فِي خَمْسِينَ وَمِائَةِ فَارِسٍ وَکُنْتُ لَا أَثْبُتُ عَلَی الْخَيْلِ فَذَکَرْتُ ذَلِکَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَضَرَبَ يَدَهُ فِي صَدْرِي فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ وَاجْعَلْهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا قَالَ فَانْطَلَقَ فَحَرَّقَهَا بِالنَّارِ ثُمَّ بَعَثَ جَرِيرٌ إِلَی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا يُبَشِّرُهُ يُکْنَی أَبَا أَرْطَاةَ مِنَّا فَأَتَی رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا جِئْتُکَ حَتَّی تَرَکْنَاهَا کَأَنَّهَا جَمَلٌ أَجْرَبُ فَبَرَّکَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَی خَيْلِ أَحْمَسَ وَرِجَالِهَا خَمْسَ مَرَّاتٍ

Jarir b. 'Abdullah al-Bajali said: Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said to me: Can't on rid me of Dhu'I-Khalasah, the idol-house of Khath'am, and this idol-house was called the Yamanite Ka'ba. So I went along with 150 horsemen and I could not sit with steadfastness upon the horse. I made the mention of it to Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) and he struck his hand on my chest and said: O Allah, grant him steadfastness and make him the guide of righteousness and the rightly-guided one. So he went away and he set fire to it. Then Jarir sent some person to Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) whose Kunya was Abu Arta to give him the happy news about that. He came to Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) and said: I have not come to you (but with the news) that we have left Dhu'l-Khalasah as a scabed camel. Thereupon Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) blessed the horses of Ahmas and the men of their tribe five times

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَکْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا وَکِيعٌ ح و حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح و حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ح و حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ يَعْنِي الْفَزَارِيَّ ح و حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ کُلُّهُمْ عَنْ إِسْمَعِيلَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ وَقَالَ فِي حَدِيثِ مَرْوَانَ فَجَائَ بَشِيرُ جَرِيرٍ أَبُو أَرْطَاةَ حُصَيْنُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ يُبَشِّرُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ismail with different chains of transmitters and in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Marwan (the words are): A person giving the glad tidings on behalf of Jarir came or Abu Husain b. Rabi`a came in order to give glad tidings to Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ).

حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَأَبُو بَکْرِ بْنُ النَّضْرِ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا وَرْقَائُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْيَشْکُرِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي يَزِيدَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَی الْخَلَائَ فَوَضَعْتُ لَهُ وَضُوئًا فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قَالَ مَنْ وَضَعَ هَذَا فِي رِوَايَةِ زُهَيْرٍ قَالُوا وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي بَکْرٍ قُلْتُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ

Ibn 'Abbas reported that Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) came to privy and I placed for him water for ablution, When he came out he said: Who placed it here? And in a version of Zuhair they (the Companions) said, and in the version of Abu Bakr (the words are): I said: It is Ibn 'Abbas (who has done that), whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: May Allah grant him deep understanding of religion.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الْعَتَکِيُّ وَخَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَأَبُو کَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ کُلُّهُمْ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَنَامِ کَأَنَّ فِي يَدِي قِطْعَةَ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ وَلَيْسَ مَکَانٌ أُرِيدُ مِنْ الْجَنَّةِ إِلَّا طَارَتْ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ فَقَصَصْتُهُ عَلَی حَفْصَةَ فَقَصَّتْهُ حَفْصَةُ عَلَی النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرَی عَبْدَ اللَّهِ رَجُلًا صَالِحًا

Ibn 'Umar reported: I saw in a state of sleep as if I have in my hand a piece of silk cloth and there is no place in the Paradise where I intend to reach but that piece of cloth does not fly towards it. I made a mention of it to Hafsa (the sister of Ibn 'Umar) and Hafsa made a mention of it to Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ), whereupon Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said: I find 'Abdullah b 'Umar a pious person.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِعَبْدٍ قَالَا أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ کَانَ الرَّجُلُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا رَأَی رُؤْيَا قَصَّهَا عَلَی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَرَی رُؤْيَا أَقُصُّهَا عَلَی النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ وَکُنْتُ غُلَامًا شَابًّا عَزَبًا وَکُنْتُ أَنَامُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَی عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَأَيْتُ فِي النَّوْمِ کَأَنَّ مَلَکَيْنِ أَخَذَانِي فَذَهَبَا بِي إِلَی النَّارِ فَإِذَا هِيَ مَطْوِيَّةٌ کَطَيِّ الْبِئْرِ وَإِذَا لَهَا قَرْنَانِ کَقَرْنَيْ الْبِئْرِ وَإِذَا فِيهَا نَاسٌ قَدْ عَرَفْتُهُمْ فَجَعَلْتُ أَقُولُ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ النَّارِ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ النَّارِ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ النَّارِ قَالَ فَلَقِيَهُمَا مَلَکٌ فَقَالَ لِي لَمْ تُرَعْ فَقَصَصْتُهَا عَلَی حَفْصَةَ فَقَصَّتْهَا حَفْصَةُ عَلَی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَوْ کَانَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ سَالِمٌ فَکَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِکَ لَا يَنَامُ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

Ibn 'Umar reported that when a person saw anything in sleep during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) he narrated it to Allah's Messenger, and I also had a longing that I should also see in a dream something which I should narrate to Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) and I was at that time an unmarried young man. I was sleeping in the mosque during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) tl) at I saw in a dream as if two Angels have taken hold of me and they have carried me to the fire, and, lo, it was built like the easing of a well and had two pillars like those of a well; and, lo, there were people in it whom I knew and I cried out: I seek refuge with Allah from Hell-fire; I seek refuge with Allah from Hell-fire. Then another Angel joined the two others, and said unto me: You need not fear I narrated this dream to llafsa and she narrated it to Allah's Messenger, whereupon Allah's Apostle said: Worthy is this man Abdullah, O that he would pray at night, and Silim added that Abdullah afterwards slept only but for a small part of the night.
