أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو مَوْلَی الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَی يَمِينٍ فَرَأَی غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُکَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

It was narrated that ‘Adiyy bin I said: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: ‘Whoever swears an oath, then sees something better than it, let him do that which is better and offer expiation for his oath.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزَّعْرَائِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ ابْنَ عَمٍّ لِي أَتَيْتُهُ أَسْأَلُهُ فَلَا يُعْطِينِي وَلَا يَصِلُنِي ثُمَّ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَيَّ فَيَأْتِينِي فَيَسْأَلُنِي وَقَدْ حَلَفْتُ أَنْ لَا أُعْطِيَهُ وَلَا أَصِلَهُ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ آتِيَ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَأُکَفِّرَ عَنْ يَمِينِي

It was narrated from Abu Al Ahwas that his father said: “I said: ‘Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم, I have a cousin, and I come to him and ask him (for help) but he does not give me anything, and he does not uphold the ties of kinship with me. Then, when he needs me, he comes to me and asks me (for help). I swore that I would not give him anything, nor uphold the ties of kinship with him.’ He commanded me to do that which is better and to offer expiation for my oath.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَخْنَسِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا نَذْرَ وَلَا يَمِينَ فِيمَا لَا تَمْلِکُ وَلَا فِي مَعْصِيَةٍ وَلَا قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ

‘Amr bin Shuaib narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “There is no vow and no oath concerning that which one does not possess, nor to commit sin, nor to sever the ties of kinship.” (Hasan)

أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ حَلَفَ فَاسْتَثْنَی فَإِنْ شَائَ مَضَی وَإِنْ شَائَ تَرَکَ غَيْرَ حَنِثٍ

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “Whoever swears an oath and says: ‘If Allah wills,’ then if he wishes he may go ahead, and if he wishes he may not, without having broken his oath.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَقَّاصٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ وَإِنَّمَا لِامْرِئٍ مَا نَوَی فَمَنْ کَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَی اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَی اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَنْ کَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَتَزَوَّجُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَی مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ

It was narrated from ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “Actions are but by intentions, and each person will have but that which he intended. Thus, he whose emigration was for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, his emigration was for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and he whose emigration was to achieve some worldly gain or to take some woman in marriage, his emigration was for that for which he emigrated.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ زَعَمَ عَطَائٌ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ کَانَ يَمْکُثُ عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ فَيَشْرَبُ عِنْدَهَا عَسَلًا فَتَوَاصَيْتُ أَنَا وَحَفْصَةُ أَنَّ أَيَّتُنَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْتَقُلْ إِنِّي أَجِدُ مِنْکَ رِيحَ مَغَافِيرَ أَکَلْتَ مَغَافِيرَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَی إِحْدَاهُمَا فَقَالَتْ ذَلِکَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ وَلَنْ أَعُودَ لَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَکَ إِلَی إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَی اللَّهِ عَائِشَةُ وَحَفْصَةُ وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلَی بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثًا لِقَوْلِهِ بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا

‘Ubaid bin ‘Umair said: I heard ‘Aishah say: “The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم used to stay with Zainab bint Jabsh and drink honey at her house. I and I agreed that if the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم came to either of us, she would say: ‘I detect the smell of Maghafir (a nasty-smelling gum) on you. Have you eaten Maghafir?’ He went to one of them and she said that to him. He said: ‘No, rather I drank honey at the house of Zainab bint Jahsh, but I will never do it again.’ Then the following was revealed: ‘Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم! Why do you forbid (for yourself) that which Allah has allowed to you’ up to: ‘If you two turn in repentance to Allah’ — ‘Aishah and Hafsah — ‘And (remember) when the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives.’ refers to him saying: ‘No, rather I drank honey.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُثَنَّی بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا طَلْحَةُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْتَهُ فَإِذَا فِلَقٌ وَخَلٌّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ کُلْ فَنِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ

It was narrated that Jabir said: “I entered the house of the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم with him and there was some bread and vinegar. The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: ‘Eat; what a good condiment is vinegar.” (Sahih)
