أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَطَائِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ عَرْفَجَةَ قَالَ عُدْنَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ فَتَذَاکَرْنَا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ مَا تَذْکُرُونَ قُلْنَا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ تُفْتَحُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ وَتُغْلَقُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ وَتُغَلُّ فِيهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ وَيُنَادِي مُنَادٍ کُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ يَا بَاغِيَ الْخَيْرِ هَلُمَّ وَيَا بَاغِيَ الشَّرِّ أَقْصِرْ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا خَطَأٌ

It was narrated Az-Zuhri, from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “When Ramadan begins, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَطَائِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ عَرْفَجَةَ قَالَ کُنْتُ فِي بَيْتٍ فِيهِ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ فَرْقَدٍ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُحَدِّثَ بِحَدِيثٍ وَکَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ کَأَنَّهُ أَوْلَی بِالْحَدِيثِ مِنِّي فَحَدَّثَ الرَّجُلُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فِي رَمَضَانَ تُفْتَحُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَائِ وَتُغْلَقُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ وَيُصَفَّدُ فِيهِ کُلُّ شَيْطَانٍ مَرِيدٍ وَيُنَادِي مُنَادٍ کُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ يَا طَالِبَ الْخَيْرِ هَلُمَّ وَيَا طَالِبَ الشَّرِّ أَمْسِکْ

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: ‘There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; Whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.” (Da’if)

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا الْمُهَلَّبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبَةَ ح وَأَنْبَأَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی عَنْ الْمُهَلَّبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَسَنُ عَنْ أَبِي بَکْرَةَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُکُمْ صُمْتُ رَمَضَانَ وَلَا قُمْتُهُ کُلَّهُ وَلَا أَدْرِي کَرِهَ التَّزْکِيَةَ أَوْ قَالَ لَا بُدَّ مِنْ غَفْلَةٍ وَرَقْدَةٍ اللَّفْظُ لِعُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ

It was narrated that ‘Arfajah Said: “We visited ‘Utbah bin Farqad (when he was ill) and we talked about the month of Ramdan. He said: ‘What are you talking about?’ We said: ‘The month of Ramadan.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم say: In it the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of the Fire are closed, and the devils are chained up, and a caller calls out every night: doer of good, proceed; doer of evil, desist!” (Hasan) Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa’i) said: This is a mistake.

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَائٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يُخْبِرُنَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِامْرَأَةٍ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ إِذَا کَانَ رَمَضَانُ فَاعْتَمِرِي فِيهِ فَإِنَّ عُمْرَةً فِيهِ تَعْدِلُ حَجَّةً

It was narrated that ‘Arfajah said: “I was in a house with ‘Utbah bin Farqad, and I wanted to narrate a Hadith, but there was a man from among the Companions of the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم there, and I felt it was more appropriate for him to narrate the Hadith than I. The man narrated that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said, concerning Ramaclan: ‘In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of the Fire are shut, and every devil is fettered. A caller calls out every night: seeker of good, proceed; seeker of evil, desist!” (Hasan)

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَعِيلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي کُرَيْبٌ أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَی مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ قَالَ فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا وَاسْتَهَلَّ عَلَيَّ هِلَالُ رَمَضَانَ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ فَرَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ثُمَّ ذَکَرَ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ مَتَی رَأَيْتُمْ فَقُلْتُ رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ فَصَامُوا وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ قَالَ لَکِنْ رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ فَلَا نَزَالُ نَصُومُ حَتَّی نُکْمِلَ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا أَوْ نَرَاهُ فَقُلْتُ أَوَ لَا تَکْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ لَا هَکَذَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

It was narrated from Ahu Bakrah that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “None of you should say: ‘I fasted Ramaclafl’ or ‘I prayed Qiyam throughout the whole month.” I do not know whether he disliked self- praise or he said: “Inevitably there will be heedlessness and sleep.” (Da’if)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رِزْمَةَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَی عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ سِمَاکٍ عَنْ عِکْرِمَةَ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ جَائَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَی النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَنَادَی النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ صُومُوا

Ibu ‘Abbas told us: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said to a woman from among the Ansari ‘When it is Ramalan, perform ‘Umrah then, for ‘Umrah during it is equivalent to Hajj.” (SahIh)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُوسَی بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ عَنْ سِمَاکٍ عَنْ عِکْرِمَةَ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ جَائَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَی النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلَالَ اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ يَا بِلَالُ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا غَدًا

Kuraib narrated that Umm Al-Fadl sent him to Muawiyah in Ash-Sham. He said: “I came to Ash-Sham and completed her errand. Then the new crescent of Ramdan sighted while I was in Ash-Sham. I saw the new crescent on the night of Friday, then I came to Al-Madinah at the end of the month. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas asked me about the sighting of the moon and said: ‘When did you see it?’ I said: ‘We saw it on the night of Friday.’ He said: ‘You saw it on the night of Friday?’ I said: ‘Yes, and the people saw it and started fasting, and so did Muawiyah.’ He said: ‘But we saw it on the night of Saturday, so we will continue fasting until we have completed thirty days or we see it.’ said: ‘Will you not be content with the sighting of Muawiyah and his companions?’ He said: ‘No; this is what the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم enjoined upon us.” (Sahih)

يَا بِلَالُ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا غَدًا ← نَعَمْ ← أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ← جَائَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَی النَّبِيِّ فَقَالَ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلَالَ اللَّيْلَةَ ← ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ← عِكْرِمَةَ، ← سِمَاكٍ، ← زَائِدَۃَ، ← حُسَيْنٌ ← مُوسَی بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ

it was narrated that Abu ‘Abbas said: “A Bedouin came to the prophet , and said: ‘I have sighted the crescent.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Mul is His slave and Messenger? He said: Yes. So the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم gave the call, saying: ‘Fast.” (Da`if)

It was narrated that ibn ‘Abbas said: “A Bedouin came to the Prophet and said: ‘have sighted the crescent tonight.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Mul is His slave and Messenger?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Bjlal, announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.” (Da’if)

أَخْبَرَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ وَکَانَ شَيْخًا صَالِحًا بِطَرَسُوسَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْجَدَلِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي يُشَکُّ فِيهِ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنِّي جَالَسْتُ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَائَلْتُهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمْ حَدَّثُونِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَانْسُکُوا لَهَا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْکُمْ فَأَکْمِلُوا ثَلَاثِينَ فَإِنْ شَهِدَ شَاهِدَانِ فَصُومُوا وَأَفْطِرُوا

It was narrated that ‘Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Al-Khattab addressed the people on the day concerning which there was doubt (as to whether the month had begun) and said: “I sat with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم and asked them, and they narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: ‘Fast when you see it and stop fasting when you see it, and perform the rites on that basis. If it is obscured, then complete thirty days, and if two witnesses testify then fast and stop fasting.” (Sahih)
