حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْهَادِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ لَقِيَ نَاسًا خَرَجُوا مِنْ عِنْدِ مَرْوَانَ فَقَالَ مِنْ أَيْنَ جَاءَ هَؤُلَاءِ قَالُوا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ الْأَمِيرِ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ وَكُلُّ حَقٍّ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ تَكَلَّمْتُمْ بِهِ وَأَعَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَكُلُّ مُنْكَرٍ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ أَنْكَرْتُمُوهُ وَرَدَدْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ بَلْ يَقُولُ مَا يُنْكَرُ فَنَقُولُ قَدْ أَصَبْتَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ قُلْنَا قَاتَلَهُ اللَّهُ مَا أَظْلَمَهُ وَأَفْجَرَهُ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ كُنَّا بِعَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَعُدُّ هَذَا نِفَاقًا لِمَنْ كَانَ هَكَذَا
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5373
It was narrated from 'Umar ibn 'Abdullah that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar met some people who had come out from (an audience with) Marwaan. He said: Where did these people come from? They said: We have come out from (an audience with) the ruler Marwaan. He said: And did you approve of and support every word of truth you have heard and did you denounce and reject every evil thing you have seen? They said: No, by Allah. Rather he said things that we think are wrong but we said you are right, may Allah guide you. Then when we came out from (our audience with) him, we said: May Allah destroys him, how unjust and evil he is! 'Abdullah said: At the time of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) we would have regarded this as hypocrisy on the part of one who behaved like that.
