حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ عَنْ بَيَانٍ عَنْ وَبَرَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ نَرْجُو أَنْ يُحَدِّثَنَا حَدِيثًا أَوْ حَدِيثًا حَسَنًا فَبَدَرَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَّا يُقَالُ لَهُ الْحَكَمُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْقِتَالِ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ قَالَ ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ وَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَا الْفِتْنَةُ إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُقَاتِلُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَكَانَ الدُّخُولُ فِيهِمْ أَوْ فِي دِينِهِمْ فِتْنَةً وَلَيْسَ كَقِتَالِكُمْ عَلَى الْمُلْكِ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5381
It was narrated that Sa'eed ibn Jubayr said: 'Abdullah ibn Umar came out to us when we were hoping that he would tell us a hadeeth or give us a nice talk. Then a man whose name was al-Hakam hastened before any of us could utter a word and said: O Abu Abd ar-Rahmaan, what do you say about fighting when there is turmoil (between Muslims)? He said: May your mother be bereft of you! Do you know what turmoil is? Muhammad (PBUH) used to fight the mushrikeen, and joining them or their religion was turmoil, not like your fighting for power!
