حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ أَلَا إِنَّ بَقَاءَكُمْ فِيمَا سَلَفَ قَبْلَكُمْ مِنْ الْأُمَمِ كَمَا بَيْنَ صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ إِلَى غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ أُعْطِيَ أَهْلُ التَّوْرَاةِ التَّوْرَاةَ فَعَمِلُوا بِهَا حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَصَفَ النَّهَارُ عَجَزُوا فَأُعْطُوا قِيرَاطًا قِيرَاطًا وَأُعْطِيَ أَهْلُ الْإِنْجِيلِ الْإِنْجِيلَ فَعَمِلُوا بِهِ حَتَّى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ثُمَّ عَجَزُوا فَأُعْطُوا قِيرَاطًا قِيرَاطًا ثُمَّ أُعْطِيتُمْ الْقُرْآنَ فَعَمِلْتُمْ بِهِ حَتَّى غَرَبَتْ الشَّمْسُ فَأُعْطِيتُمْ قِيرَاطَيْنِ قِيرَاطَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَهْلُ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ رَبَّنَا هَؤُلَاءِ أَقَلُّ عَمَلًا وَأَكْثَرُ أَجْرًا فَقَالَ هَلْ ظَلَمْتُكُمْ مِنْ أَجْرِكُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَقَالُوا لَا فَقَالَ فَضْلِي أُوتِيهِ مَنْ أَشَاءُ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 6029
'Abdullah ibn Umar said: I heard the Prophet (PBUH) say, when he was standing on the minbar: "Verily your lifespan compared to that of the nations who came before you is like the time from 'Asr prayer until sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah and they acted in accordance with it, until when it was midday they were unable to carry on, so they were each given one qiraat. The people of the Gospel were given the Gospel and they acted in accordance with it until 'Asr prayer: then they were unable to carry on, so they were each given one qiraat. Then you were given the Qur'an, and you acted in accordance with it until sunset, then you were each given two qiraats. The people of the Torah and the Gospel said: Our Lord, they did the least work but receive the greatest reward. He said: Have I wronged you with regard to your reward? They said: No. Then He said: That is my bounty that I grant to whomever I will."
