Abu Hurayrah's narrations reach us through a vast network of teachers and students. He learned directly from the Prophet ﷺ and from senior companions, and in turn became the teacher of hundreds of Tabi'un — the generation whose preservation of his narrations forms the backbone of the major Hadith collections.

Abu Hurayrah learned directly from the Prophet ﷺ during his three years of close companionship, and supplemented his knowledge by studying with senior Sahaba in Madinah.
إِنِّي أَجْنَبْتُ فَلَمْ أُصِبْ الْمَاءَ،
إِنِّي أَجْنَبْتُ فَلَمْ أَجِدِ الْمَاءَ
إِنِّي جِئْتُكَ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَجُلٍ يُمِلُّ الْمُصْحَفَ
يا أمير المؤمنين تركت بالكوفة رجلا يملى المصاحف
إِنَّ أَهْلَ أَرْضِ كَذَا وَكَذَا يُطِيقُونَ مِنَ الْخَرَاجِ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَلَيْهِمْ،
إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ كَأَنَّ الأَرْضَ أَعْشَبَتْ، ثُمَّ أجْدَبَتْ، ثُمَّ أعْشَبَتْ، ثُمَّ أجْدَبَتْ،
يا أمير المؤمنين والله لتحملني
له: إني أجنبت فلم أصب الماء.
إن أرض كذا وكذا يطيقون من الخراج أكثر مما عليهم
يا أمير المؤمنين إني أخاف أن أكون منافقاً،
