قال أبو عبيد وبلغني عن سفيان بن عيينة ، عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل ، قال : حدثتني الربيع ، قالت : أتاني ابن عم لك ، تعني ابن عباس ، فسألني الوضوء ، فحدثته ، فقال : « ما أجد في الكتاب إلا غسلتين ومسحتين » . قال أبو عبيد : يعني أنه جعل في القدمين المسح مثل الرأس

حدثنا محمد ، قال : أخبرنا أبو عبيد قال : ثنا إسماعيل بن إبراهيم ، عن داود بن أبي هند ، عن الشعبي ، قال : « إنما المسح على الرجلين ، ألا ترى أن ما كان عليه الغسل جعل عليه التيمم ، وما كان عليه المسح أهمل » قال أبو عبيد : يعني في الوضوء قال أبو عبيد : والأمر المعمول به عند الناس : الأخذ بالأحاديث الأولى التي فيها وجوب غسل الأقدام ، ظواهرها وبواطنها وأعقابها ، فلا يجزئ غير ذلك ، فإن ترك تارك شيئا منها ، حتى صلى ، كانت عليه إعادة صلاته وهذا هو قول العلماء من أهل الحجاز والعراق وأصحاب الأثر والرأي ، ولا أعلمهم يقولون غيره ومنه قول عائشة : « لأن أحزهما بالسكاكين ، أحب إلي من أن أمسح عليهما »
